THE STORY

Jony C a.k.a. Jonathan Cheung, is a multi-instrumentalist, arranger, singer-songwriter. His musical journey started at very young age. He started training in vocal and piano by the age of 6, and won various competitions. After 10 years of singing and performing in the Hong Kong Academy of Performing Arts’ chorus and chamber singers groups, he studied classical voice with Katusha Tsui-Fraser for one year. At the same time, he played in the school symphony as a clarinetist and percussionist. With the symphony, he performed in many big Hong Kong venues, such as the Hong Kong City Hall and Queen Elizabeth Stadium. Besides playing in the symphony, he also formed a rock band and participated in various band shows as the drummer/singer playing many non-Chinese rock music. At the age of 17, he moved to the San Francisco Bay Area for high school. He participated in the high school chorus and chamber singers. Despite the language barriers, he auditioned and landed the lead role in the high school musical. With that role, he won the Musical Director favorite Award, and "Outstanding performer" by the American Musical Theater, San Jose. A year later in college, he recorded a rock demo on the piano with a former Sony Japan artist which was sent to music labels in Japan and received positive reviews. After two years of college, he moved to San Diego and majored in computer music at UC San Diego. At the end of the undergraduate program, he participated in the "Best of ICAM" show for his major. The professor at the time selected one of Jony’s PD (PureData) projects to collaborate and created a graphical automated surround sound panner for Pro Tools in Max/MSP. During his time at UCSD, Jony also studied and performed classical voice with Ph.D professor Fiona Chatwin.

After college, Jony stayed in San Diego with a day job and focused on producing church music for a couple of years. He got to know Lamb music's founder Wendy Liu and collaborated with her. He composed, arranged, sang and produced numerous tracks in their 6th and 7th albums (Eternity and Renewed). On the project, he also worked with producers like Jeff Lams, Brian Steckler, and Alex Bush. Besides church music, he performed in many local mini-concerts in pop and rock music in San Diego.

By 2006, Jony also started to collaborate with others in all aspects of music production. He did music for TV commercials, and websites. He produced a couple of tracks for promotional video clips for Sony while he was working on SonyStyle.com. He arranged songs for many upcoming singers and groups. He also started to write Chinese music. Many of his earlier work was more alternative. In 2007, he met songwriter Alan Cheung and was signed into his company MusicGlobes. He has been writing and producing pop demos ever since.

Jony's music is not the typical Cantopop or K songs. His styles range from alternative, acoustic, R&B, techno to pop. Jony passion is to capture the emotion of the music by focusing on the arrangement and delivery of the music. You can hear these details throughout his demos on his website.
